Arctic campaign spring 2011

Francisco Navarro, together with the Russian researcher Evgeny Vasilenko, carried out the fieldwork of the Arctic campaign of spring (Abril) 2011 in Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The logistic support was provided by Hornsund Polish Polar Station. The core of the fieldwork was the radio-echo sounding of different glaciers, both from the glacier surface and from helicopter. It was the first time that our team operates an ice radar from helicopter. All the echo-sounding was done using the new ground-penetrating radar VIRL7 of 20 MHz developed by our team. The ground-based echo-sounding covered the Amundsenisen icefield and Recherchebreen glacier, and were done in cooperation with Polish colleagues. The heli-borne echo-sounding spanned the glaciers Paierlbreen-Nornebreen and Austre Torellbreen, and Dr Martina Schäfer, from the University of Lapland, assisted us in the airborne radar profiling.
